Odds are, if you're this passionate about it, you already have a copy, and the existence of a new version hasn't erased it. There is room in the world for both.

I hate the One Piece opening, but then I hate One Piece, so different strokes for different folks. Big O is a great opening, and almost made this list. If I make a list of Western animated openings/endings, I might include Oban Star-Racers on the grounds it's at least as French as it is Japanese, and frankly there's less competition in a Western list. I like Minna no Piece, but I like Sorairo Days better, and Libera Me from Hell (the rap/hymn that plays in the most awesome moments of the last few episodes) better than either.Froborrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08782366056731381450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705216410906868562.post-28189513377238838792012-12-14T16:06:35.797-05:002012-12-14T16:06:35.797-05:00Re: Robotech: I feel it's more complicated tha...Re: Robotech: I feel it's more complicated than that, and I say that as someone who didn't even mind the change, initially. The series hinges on the fiction that these three wholly different universes are all one and the same, and the original opening is the one space where these characters are actually allowed to interact. Changing the opening to reflect exclusively on the cycle that happens to be airing feels like an apology, and takes away that element of interconnectedness.

As for the list...I like it.

In the vein of your DragonBall Z pick, I have lots of affection for the original One Piece English opening, even if its mostly contextual. It was my first actual contact with the series, and it was singlehandedly responsible for getting me and my brother--who had gone to our great aunts apartment to watch TV, our house still having its power out after a hurricane--to watch that first episode of the dub. Without it, I doubt I would have given it a chance. Similarly, the first two Italian openings do a great job of suggesting a better show than what we actually get.

Other favorites: Both Big-O openings, for feeling so endearingly cheap-looking. Genesis Climber MOSPEADA's opening, which is probably my favorite thing about that show (or rather, it's Robotech counterpart). The ending theme for Öban Star-Racers, which would made me cry unfailingly if my tear ducts cooperated for things like that. And if we're talking purely about music divorced from visuals, "You Wa Shock!", from Fist of the North Star and "Minna no Peace" from Gurren Lagann, the latter of which, if people actually listened to me, would have been the theme song for both Obama campaign victory parties.
Ianhttp://doknowbutchie.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.com
